At one level the film is about Prakasan, an educated and idealist young man who is deeply committed to the society. He earns his livelihood as a farmer, and chooses to fight against the exploitation and injustice that he sees around him.
While at another level, the film is about Kari Gurukkal, a hero from the past. Murali, who acted as Appa Mesthiri in Neythukaran, does both the roles of Kari Gurukkal and Prakasan.
Prakasan wanted to recreate the story of Kari Gurukkal through his play. However, he interspersed his journey with Gurukkal's. That way, the film looks at degeneration of contemporary life and times.
Pulijanmam is based on a story by N. Prabhakaran, which has been scripted by N. Prabhakaran and N. Sasidharan.
