How did films come your way?
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are responsible for that. I would visit India frequently to do shows after Ek Glassy became a hit. I happened to meet music directors Vishal-Shekar. They listened to my songs and suggested I meet Shankar Mahadevan. He appreciated my voice and asked me to call him when I was here next.
So I did. We worked together on an HIV/AIDS campaign with Richa Sharma. While recording, Sriramji [director Sriram Raghavan] happened to be there and he offered the song in Johnny Gaddaar. I jumped at the offer.
It was like a dream for me. I got a start in this industry, and that too with the famous trio. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy gave me creative freedom and we had a great time at the studio.
How do you write your music? What do you think while you're writing?
Initially, I used to write and scrap it. This went on for four years. I would lock myself in a room and write. I would not go out unless I was ready to face the mic. I learnt that the more I write, the more practice I get.
I do not want to sound the same in every film I sing in. I want everything to be a hit and everything to be different.
