2008: Bad time for Kannada films

The first half of the year can be described as the worst period in the history of Kannada cinema where quality took a backseat. So far, producers of only six films have recovered their investments while many distributors lost heavily.

Overall it was a mixed bag. Small budget films like Akasha Gange and Garagasa were able to make a mark. As for blockbusters, there was only one -- Gaja. Other films like Galipata, Garagasa and Mussanje Maathu were able to bring in profits for the producer though the surprise hit was Nanda Nanditha.

Here's a look at the most successful of the lot.

Gaja
Director: Maadesh
Cast: Darshan, Navya Nair and Komal

The biggest hit of the year so far is the remake of the Telugu film Bhadra which starred Ravi Teja and Meera Jasmine in the lead.

The film ended Darshan's string of flops and revived his stature of a top commercial star in the Kannada film industry. One of the main reasons behind the film's success was Harikrishna's songs.
