A successful dreamer

Anees Bazmee

Okay, so you know he is the guy, who directed two of the biggest hits in the last three years -- No Entry (2005) and Welcome (2007). And you are probably waiting, in eager anticipation, for his forthcoming film, Singh is Kinng.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration if we say what David Dhawan is to editing-and-directing, Bazmee is to writing-and-directing. No wonder the two have collaborated on a number of occasions.

In a career spanning two decades Bazmee, the writer has supplied his audience with quite a few hits like Shola Aur Shabnam, Bol Radha Bol, Aankhen and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi), and flops like Yaad Rakhegi Duniya, Mr Azaad, Andolan and Prithvi.

Bazmee's directorial debut, Hulchul (1995), belonged to the second category and was a colossal disaster.

But he struck gold with his second, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), a rip-off of French Kiss. Four years later, Primal Fear inspired him to make Deewangee. To put it bluntly, Bazmee isn't a great writer -- his works lack imagination, and usually a concoction of roughly assembled ideas. Ditto for Bazmee the director.

But one has to admit, he is a very intelligent filmmaker. He is sure about the audience he is catering to, and their tastes. And that is precisely why his films succeed. In the final analysis, success is what matters. And Anees Bazmee is successful.

In the picture: A still from Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.
