Old habits die hard

Sudhir Mishra

His maiden writing effort, Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983), became a cult classic. Saeed Mirza's offbeat Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984) and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's directorial debut Khamosh (1985) further enhanced his credentials as a writer.

In 1987, Mishra turned director with Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin. The film won a National Award, followed by another one the very next year for his second venture Main Zinda Hoon.

Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996), Chameli (2003) and most importantly, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005) followed, which further bolstered his reputation as a filmmaker. These films were dark yet sensitive, and they tended to take a path hitherto unventured.

That doesn't mean that Mishra didn't have his share of disappointments like Calcutta Mail (2003) and Khoya Khoya Chand (2007). But his reputation as a filmmaker with a creative instinct and his eagerness go against the tide continued to extract great performances from his actors.

This year marks Mishra's 25th year in the industry and to this day, he first takes up the writing responsibilities before doubling up as director. As they say, old habits die hard.
