 Nominee Spotlight: Tony Gilroy
Following his feature debut, Tony developed a fantastic working relationship with director Taylor Hackford, writing features Dolores Claiborne, Proof Of Life and, notably, The Devil's Advocate, starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves.
The Advocate script had been around in Hollywood for a long time, and Hackford, by then a dear friend, wanted to rewrite and make it. Inspired in part by CS Lewis' classic The Screwtape Letters, Tony took all the evils external to the film's protagonists and internalised it. While this might not have completely succeeded in context of the film, it remains a recurring theme in the screenwriter's work.
