'I am still waiting for that one big hit song'

Struggling years

I came to Mumbai in 2001. I knew Sandeep Chowta, as I had sung the Telugu version of Mast for him. He gave me work in Jungle, Company and Dum. I sang jingles for Shankar-Eshaan-Loy. Sonu Nigam gave me stage songs. That's how I always had money coming in.

But even though I had a composer friend like Sandeep Chowta, I still had to meet other composers for work. I got a good response.

My first solo song Aankhon mein Rahon (Company) gave me recognition. People started noticing me. After that, I sang Laila laila (Samay), which got me a Stardust award. My songs in Bunty Aur Babli and Guru are very popular. But I am still waiting for that one big hit song.
