'Welcome'ing the newest talent in town

The name Sowmya Raoh may not ring a bell yet. But that's just a matter of time.

We've loved this singer's voice in movies like Welcome, Partner, Bunty Aur Babli, Guru, and many more. But Sowmya agrees that she has not got that one big hit to become a star.

Until that happens, we chat with Sowmya about her life and struggles.

Early years

I hail from Bangalore. My mother was a playback singer in Kannada movies, while my father -- who worked at the Reserve Bank of India -- took up singing as a hobby. My brother, Sunil, starred in Freaky Chakra, opposite Deepti Naval. He is an actor as well as a singer. So singing was a natural progression for me. I always wanted to be a singer.

I did my first stage show at the age of seven. By the time I was eight, I cut an album for children. I also trained in Carnatic classical singing.

My mother got quite a few offers for a children's Kannada album. Though I am a Kannadiga, I did not know how to read the language fluently then. So my mother would make me memorise the whole song.
