2008: the slate of smartness
Australia
Baz Luhrmann returns to the big screen with this pre-WW2 film set down under. Nicole Kidman plays an English aristocrat who inherits a massive ranch, and in a desperate attempt to save her land, shakes hands with scraggly local Hugh Jackman to drive 2,000 heads of cattle across the country. Oh, and bad terrain isn't their only trouble. The Japanese are just getting set to bomb Darwin -- following their Pearl Harbour success.
Luhrmann and Kidman together after Moulin Rouge is enough of a reason to line up for this, but Jackman's been getting better and better with each film. Giddyap.
