2008: the slate of smartness

Valkyrie

Finally, Tom Cruise in something that seems to have a really great story. It's been awhile. Valkyrie, based on a German Army plot to assassinate Hitler, is a historical thriller directed by Usual Suspects helmer Bryan Singer. Cruise gets to portray the leader of the mission, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg.

It is, obviously, a failed mission. Adolf was saved -- the conference table got in the way of the Fuhrer's death -- and eventually 5,000 people were arrested for the attempt, with over 200 executed.

Cruise leads a strong cast, featuring Bill Nighy and Kenneth Branagh, among others. There was German opposition to Cruise's casting -- the country frowning at his religion, Scientology -- but all was absolved soon enough, with the Colonel's own grandson declaring he was more than satisfied by Cruise's portrayal. Stauffenberg had lost his left eye, right hand and two fingers on his left hand in an Allied attack in Tunisia, and Cruise had to maintain the same disabilites through the film.

Bryan, we're waiting.
