Mortensen now treads a fine flip-flop path between commercial and critical cinema, balancing a Hidalgo with A HIstory Of Violence, and going epic again but in Spanish, with Alatriste.
This year, the actor has delivered a virtuoso performance in Cronenberg's Eastern Promises, one of the finest films of the year, as a nearly-inscrutable Russian mobster who goes through a gamut of emotions in an intense London-based crime drama.
The film hinges on Mortensen, and the actor delivers. It is a worthier performance than most previous winners have shown, yet this is a year of mindblowing acting jobs.
As said, Viggo might not even care. Rock on, man.
