The Savages (2007)
This year, she's up for Tamara Jenkins' The Savages, a touching and depressing look at two adults caring for their parents. Despite its bleak subject, the film offers scope for humour and Linney is quick to capture on it, making most of her opportunity to riff off Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays her brother. With Wendy, only able to carry on a real relationship with her cat, Linney has again found one of the most challenging or roles, and critics have hailed the way she has risen to the occasion.
Will it be third time lucky for Laura at the Oscars? We're waiting.
