Jackman's star power only increased in 2006 when he was tagged by Australia's director Baz Luhrmann to replace Russell Crowe, who was originally cast to play the film's male lead.
In the film, a WW-II era romantic epic set in the rough outback of Australia, Jackman plays a rough-n-tumble drover -- an Australian term for someone who moves herds of cattle -- who falls for an English noblewoman (Nicole Kidman) and the half-Aboriginal half-white boy she's rescued.
Speaking about the opportunity to do such a film, Jackman was quoted by Ireland's Evening Herald as saying, 'I got to shoot a big-budget, shamelessly old-fashioned romantic epic set against one of the most turbulent times in my native country's history, while, at the same time, celebrating that country's natural beauty, its people, its cultures... I'll die a happy man knowing I've got this film on my CV.'
