'Hosting and judging reality shows is the same because both are scripted'

Did that upset you?

No. If I was an insecure person, it would have. It was meant to be Javed's song, and so it is. Everybody has the right to earn their bread and butter. There is no point cribbing about something that was not meant for you.

What do you think went wrong with Yuvvraaj's music? Why, do you think, the film and music did not do well?

Yuvvraaj had great songs. My favourite was Dost. I wish I was given that song to sing. I sang three songs from the film. I think they were not promoted well. If they were, things would have been different.

Mastam Mastam came out when the film released and since the film didn't do well, the song got lost. Dil Ka Sikka is out now, and the film is out of theatres. A lot depends on the fate of the film. If it is promoted well, it would have done well -- like Nagada from Jab We Met.

What is your take on reality shows on television? You have judged and hosted some of them.

Hosting and judging reality shows is the same because both are scripted. When I hosted Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, only the introductory speech was scripted -- and that too, by me. I wrote my own script and the whole show would go on the way I wanted it to. Nothing was read or told to me. The judges also did whatever they wanted.

Today, scripts are ready for the hosts, as well as the judges. The channel makes the judges fight to increase TRPs. I think something is seriously wrong with the audiences, who want to see celebrities fight on screen. When I was the judge of Li'l Champs, I made it a point not to fight with my co-judge. That helped and we had the highest TRPs.

I think reality shows need to take a break and breathe. We have had enough of music, singers and judge-fights. It's high time we come out with something more innovative and creative, like a sports show. We should find newer ways of entertaining people.
