'Out of respect for me, A R Rahman kept the humming part intact'

You have been the voice of Shah Rukh Khan many times. How has the experience been?

I have sung equally for Shah Rukh and Salman. I have sung for them, never with them. Music is a completely different field; the film's cast and singers don't work together. Shah Rukh is not the type who interferes. He has faith on the music composers and director. I have never seen him during a recording, giving suggestions.

Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke was a difficult song. Adi wanted a rehearsal so that he could sleep over it and think about how he would shoot it.

I remember singing the song with the mike in my hand in the studio, and he was really impressed and appreciative. He was thankful that I understood his concept, as I didn't change my voice and copy the original. The major credit goes to composers Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Jaideep Sahni.

Is it true that you had sung Guzarish a long time ago?

Yes. I sang the song about two and a half years ago, with different lyrics. When they changed the lyrics and asked me to sing, I wasn't available. I was in New Jersey for my son's birth.

So they called Javed Ali and I think he has done an awesome job. The song became his. But out of respect for me, A R Rahman kept the humming part intact.
