In Tamil films, mother-son and sibling relationships have been thoroughly explored but father-daughter relationships remained stubbornly off-limits, barring the odd Sivaji Ganesan film where the thespian wept into a towel on his daughter's wedding.
But in recent years, the trend seems to be changing. Take Radhamohan's Abhiyum Naanum. As Abhiyum Naanum hits the screens, we look at movies celebrating this relationship.
Keladi Kanmani (1990)
Director Vasanth's directorial debut made a mark with its sensitive portrayal of a father's love for his daughter, bolstered by pity, as she is motherless.
This S P Balasubramaniam-Radhika-Anju-Ramesh Aravind starrer showcased the real affection that was the basis for hatred.
Nina, who plays SPB's daughter, hates her father's lover. She paves the way for much heartbreak and the separation between the couple -- a mistake she realises when, years later, she falls in love but faces separation as she stares death in the face.
