'Unnale Unnale was like attending school, and Jeeva was my teacher'

You were directed by Jeeva, one of the finest technicians, in your debut film. How was it being directed by others later?

Unnale Unnale was like attending school for the first time, and Jeeva was my teacher. It was also like taking a crash course in acting. I can never forget my first teacher. It is really hard not to have him by my side when my second film releases. I will always be his boy.

For the first few days of Unnale Unnale, I was very nervous because I had no idea about the film industry. But he guided me and gave me the confidence to face the camera. I was completely under his guidance.

Kannan, a debutant has directed me in Jayam Kondaan while Saran, a veteran will be directing me in my next film, Modi Vilayadu. All the directors have different styles of working and I have to adapt to each one.

If acting in Unnale Unnale was like going to school for the first time, which class would you say you have reached now?

I think I have reached the tenth standard now! In Unnale Unnale, I had no courage without Jeeva by my side but today, I have gone ahead and done the film with fantastic support from Kannan and his crew. All of them stood by me.

How do you describe yourself as an actor? Are you a director's actor?

I am purely a director's actor. I feel the director and the cinematographer are the people who make a film and we are all puppets in their hands. I am ready to be moulded by each director.

Jeeva Sir used to tell me that the industry teaches you something new every day. He said that though he had been in the industry for 20 odd years, he was still learning. So, every day, I go to the sets with an open mind.
