He followed this up with memorable films like El Cid (1961), 55 Days At Peking (1963), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and The Three Musketeers (1973).
His roles in films like Planet Of The Apes (1968), Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970), The Omega Man (1971), and Soylent Green (1973) made him a favourite with science fiction fans.
However, the actor's tryst with direction was not as successful.
