Henri Vernuil's Any Number Can Win (1962)
An ageing thief, just out of prison, decides to do one last job so that he can retire. He has the perfect plan but he needs a partner. He hires a cocky rake, who has another agenda. And now, let's bite our nails and watch the cookie crumble.
Jean Gabin, the Dharmendra of France; Alain Delon, the sexy, young anti-hero. Any Number Can Win is a charming, understated caper thriller with a terrific climax. Shot on the French Riviera, and centering on a casino robbery, the movie is low on 'high octane thrills' but high on pure cinema. Pure majaa!
