Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956)
Stanley was 27, and I say Stanley because he was not the Stanley Kubrick then.
The Killing was his second feature film. It's among his greatest films, and features a terrific race-track heist. And a quirky ensemble of thugs. Once again, we see how they are destroyed by flaws in their character.
Great dialogue: You've got a big dollar sign where others have a heart.
Before Quentin Tarantino was even born, it was Kubrick who tweaked with non-linear structure. And how! One of the key pleasures of The Killing is the fact that it's told from multiple viewpoints of its characters.
Godard said: Every film must have a beginning, middle and end, not necessarily in that order.
