'Whatever films I am doing today is all thanks to Iqbal, Dor and Apna Sapna Money Money'

Tell us about Dil Dosti Etc.

It's about life in college, and friendships like the name suggests. When we go to college we have fun, fall in love, make strong bonds... It's a journey; a search for your identity. At the end of the journey, it can either make you or break you. But it is not preachy.

What sort of research did you do for this film, as your character comes from a small town in Bihar?

Producer Prakash Jha and director Manish Tiwary helped me a lot in terms of dialect, body language, and attitude. I had no idea of politics in Delhi University. I have seen college politics in Mumbai but it's not as much here. In the northern states, it is more aggressive.

I heard several stories, which I couldn't believe! People carry guns to college and shoot at the drop of a hat.

I play Sanjay Mishra, who believes in certain things. He has his logic and justification for doing anything. He is very idealistic. But at the same time, he wants to make it big in politics.

You shot first seven scenes on digital camera as Prakash Jha wanted to see Manish Tiwary's work and all of you agreed to do those scenes free of cost.

When I read the script, I liked it. It was something not many people would offer me after Iqbal. After Iqbal, I would get roles of simpletons, or sports films. The character of Sanjay Mishra came to me out of the blue. Manish was the first person who had faith in me. So I had no issues shooting the trial scenes.

The entire team was very young, including your director who's only 34. What was the atmosphere on the sets like?

There was a lot of positive energy flowing. We had our share of mistakes and arguments. But it was okay because everyone wanted to improve the product.

How was it working with Manish?

He has done some short films and documentaries in Spain. I liked his approach. But he was raw where the technical aspect is concerned. Our cameraman Arvind would help him. But he had done his homework well. He completed the film in the time and the budget we were given.

How much has the success of Dor and Iqbal helped you?

Whatever movies I am doing now, is all thanks to Iqbal, Dor and Apna Sapna Money Money. In fact, after Iqbal people were bit apprehensive but Dor and Apna Sapna cleared their doubts.
