Bollywood's greatest villains

Anupam Kher as Dr Dang in Karma

Though his body of work is dominated by light-hearted roles (Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) or heart-wrenching ones (Saaransh, Daddy, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara), Anupam Kher proved to be equally convincing as a sophisticated scoundrel in Subhash Ghai's jingoistic masala, Karma.

To bring out the worst of his bespectacled, bearded antagonist -- Dr Dang, out to terrorise the nation, Kher used his flaring eyes and threatening tone to chilling effect. Some 'thappad ki goonj' eh?

According to Ghai's website, Mukta Arts, Amrish Puri was the first choice for Dang's role. But he chose Kher over Puri because people had seen the latter get 'killed so many times' on celluloid previously that it would only add to the monotony.
