The four-day Telluride Film Festival often features Indian cinema like Mira Nair's The Namesake, Raj Kapoor's Sree 420 and Satyajit Ray's Sonar Kella.
But in its 34 years, the festival has only honoured two Indian film personalities -- Om Puri in 2001 and now, Benegal.
At the official tribute to Benegal held at the historic Sheridan Opera House, Benegal pointed out that both the Telluride Film Festival and Ankur were 34 years old.
Earlier, Benegal was presented with the festival's Silver Medallion by the French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin (he co-directed Tout va bien with Jean-Luc Goddard).
Dressed in jeans and a sports jacket (Telluride Film Festival is known for its cool and casual style as opposed to the more business like and official dress sense at the European film events), the director stood beaming with his hands folded as the audience gave him a standing ovation.
