The India factor: Roland Joffe's interpretation of Dominique Lapierre's The City of Joy, as Kolkata (where the principal shooting took place) is fondly referred to, celebrates the human spirit even under the most impoverished circumstances. While Om Puri and Shabana Azmi, playing slum-dwellers, brilliantly got into the skin of their characters, City of Joy drew fair amount of attention owing to the presence of the Ghost star.
