Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a remake of a famous Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu directed by Fazil and starring Shobhana, Suresh Gopi, Mohanlal and Vinaya Prasad.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa stars Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, Akshay Kumar and Ameesha Patel, and is directed by Priyadarshan. Interestingly, Priyadarshan was a second assistant director in Manichitrathazhu.
The original has Shobhana, who's married to Suresh Gopi. At his ancestral home, she gets possessed by supernatural forces. Confused, Suresh Gopi calls his psychiatrist friend (Mohanlal) for help.
This spirit (a dancer from another era) is out to get revenge against a king who killed her lover.
Shobhana got a National award for her marvellous performance in this. This was later remade in Tamil, in Rajnikanth's Chandramukhi.
Whether Akshay and Vidya can pull off the roles in the Hindi version remains to be seen.
