The man behind Mozhi

Was it because it was your first film?

Yes, Nandanam was my first film and opened me up to a new world of cinema.

Why is Mozhi still with you?

I made friends with some wonderful people during the making of Mozhi. Today, whenever I come to Chennai, we -- Prakash (Raj), Radha(mohan), Viji (Mozhi's scriptwriter) and I find time to hang out together. We have a lot of fun together. All of us got emotionally attached to the film and we felt sad when the shooting got over. I had never felt like this before.

What bonded you people together? Similar tastes?

We got to know each other because of Mozhi. There is a lot of similarity in the way we look at cinema, what we think we should take and give back to cinema, the kind of films we want to see, the kind of films we want to make...

So, when you meet and hang out, do you discuss only films?

No, not at all. But cinema takes a lot of our conversational time. I am not a hanging out–guy and you rarely meet guys with whom you can have intelligent conversation. These three are very intelligent, knowledgeable and well read. They have been through such a great journey in life that you can learn a lot about life from them. They are also wonderful filmmakers.

Did you expect this kind of a denouement when you signed Mozhi?

No. I had struck a chord with Prakash Raj when we were working together for Parijatham. There was something about the man that struck me. He is very charismatic and intelligent. It is very easy to be in awe of him.
