'Every Rajni film is a holiday!'
Johnson, a Tamil Catholic and head of a local Rajni fan club, told me: "This is less big than the previous pooja. We have been celebrating since 6 am, setting off firecrackers and giving our blessings."
Perhaps struck by the novelty of a foreigner wading through this chaos, Johnson and a few of his sidekicks procured two tickets for me and my colleague Reuben within minutes. The queue snaked from the movie theatre and across the street, but I was triumphantly paraded past the unlucky and escorted up to balcony seating. He also shoved a handful of sweets into my palm and fastened a Rajni cap on my head.
