My voice, your face = Our hits

Any playback singer's biggest triumph lies in becoming a credible voice of the person he sings for.

Like, the legendary partnership between Mukesh and Raj Kapoor, which was nothing short of awe-inspiring and culminated in an extraordinary body of work.

From Awaara hoon (Awaara) and Mera Joota hai Japani (Shree 420) to Jeena yahan marna yahan (Mera Naam Joker) and Ek din bik jaayenge (Dharam Karam), Mukesh and RK's treasure trove is filled with innumerable and unforgettable gems.

Similarly, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar matched their baritone exceptionally to suit every actor. The former dished out beautiful songs like Aise to na dekho (Teen Deviyan), Abhi na jao chod ke (Hum Dono) and Jiya ho (Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai) bearing Dev Anand's stylish persona in mind.

At the same time, he created a intense air to fuel Dilip Kumar's 'Tragedy King' image with melodies like Toote hue khwabon ne (Madhumati), Koi saagar dil ko behlata (Dil Diya Dard Liya).

Kishoreda's soulful love chants for Dev Anand, again, produced hits like Gaata rahe mera dil (Guide), Hum hain rahi pyaar ke (Nau Do Gyarah) and Yeh dil na hota bechara (Jewel Thief).

Next, he passed on his yoodle-oo traditions to another romantic hero, Rajesh Khanna. The duo rocked the charts with their combination in films like Aradhana, Amar Prem, Safar, Aap Ki Kasam, Kati Patang to name a few.

Unlike Mukesh, however, his association with the blue-eyed Kapoor remains unusually special.

That was in the good old days. Now, quite a few hit singer-actor combination tie-ups have emerged on the scene. rediff.com presents a handful.
