Murder, adultery and incest loom in the background of this audience-pleasing film which is more than a murder mystery. Essentially about mother-daughter bonding, it has grossed about $100 million in six European countries, much of it coming from Spain, the home of its director Pedro Almodovar.
The film current art-house rage has created quite an Oscar buzz for Penelope Cruz who gives a finely nuanced performance as a mother who must protect her teenage daughter while struggling to make some sense of her parents' mysterious death.
