Silsila (1981)
Talk about a casting coup. Yash Chopra managed to get real-life couple Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan and throw them into an infidelity story with Rekha playing third-wheel. Overshadowed by far too much gossip, this film arguably remains the jewel in Chopra's crown.
Bachchan, a writer, is in love with Rekha from the get-go. Meanwhile, his best friend Shashi Kapoor, a Squadron Leader in the Air Force, is all set to marry Jaya. Tragedy strikes, Shashi dies, and a weird guilt trip leads to Bachchan marrying the widowed Jaya. He never loves her, and has a passionate, defiant affair with Rekha, who is now married to Sanjeev Kumar.
Bachchan's work is extraordinary as the leading man struggles with the conflicts of love, society and infidelity as a whole.
