Padma now wants to make and act in her own films. She says she is working on making a film from Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of stories, The Interpreter Of Maladies.
"It is in the scripting stage and then we have to find a studio for it," she adds. "There are many people involved in developing it. I don't want to talk about it because I am afraid I may jinx the project."
There are also reports that she has optioned Norma Klein's 1982 novel Domestic Arrangements, about how a New York family deals with their 14-year-old daughter's success as a nymphet actress and with her first affair. The film unfolds against the background of the parents' marriage.
Padma is also an occasional television actress, having appeared in ABC's hit drama The Ten Commandments with Naveen Andrews and Omar Sharif. She plays young Moses's mother in the film.
'I have wanted it for a really long time and my job now is to carve out an acting career that I can be proud of,' she told a British publication recently. 'I'm finally starting to see the seeds that I've been so carefully planting, blooming. Finally, little blossomings,' she added.
