'Glamour isn't my cup of tea'

September 21, 2006
On Kamli (Telugu)

I don't choose films on the basis of language. There are so many stories to tell and there is talent too, so why should one restrict oneself to Hindi? My criteria for choosing a film are based on the script, director and role.

I had heard of K N T Sastry and his film Tiladanam through the writer-critic Aruna Vasudev. I liked the story of Kamli. Don't we know of so many marginalised communities? We need to tell those stories and market the films better. The story of Kamli has many layers to it, and social, economic and emotional ramifications. Although it is local in terms of its story, it is also universal. I also saw Sastry's documentary on the same subject titled Harvesting Baby Girls, and read the material given to me. I just imagine what I would have done in if I were Kamli (who gives birth to a son, then has the child swapped for a girl that her husband wants to sell). I like spontaneity to go with instinct.
