Bachchan's Jai was a powerful role though it was Amjad Khan's Gabbar Singh that stole the show later.
But Bachchan did well. One of the many memorable scenes of the film is with Leela Mishra (mausi). Jai tries to convince mausi that his friend Veeru (Dharmendra) was the best suitable bridegroom for her niece Basanti (Hema Malini), in spite of the fact that Veeru had too much to drink, was a gambler...
His humour made you laugh out, while his death made you cry. His quiet romance with Jaya Bachchan was beautifully captured by Ramesh Sippy.
