'Music has taken the shape of noise'

What about your children Luv and Kush. Are they also joining films?

I do not believe in imposing myself on anybody. I learnt in life what to do besides learning what not to do.

I believe things should be decided on the basis of the aptitude of the children. For that matter, I never insisted on my twins coming to politics. Kush has finished (his course from) New York Film Academy and now he is fortunate to work with the best director in the country, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He is learning and earning.

As far Luv is concerned, he has been going through training and also doing martial arts, dance and all that. He has been preparing himself. He is very low key, away from the media and camera and I think he is doing very well. He could be launched this year.

You had quite an illustrious career in Bollywood. Do you see any major, perceptible difference in terms of the films produced during your time or before and the ones being produced now?

Generally speaking, today in terms of technology, we have come far ahead, but we have come so far ahead that the content of films, their beauty, have all but gone. In terms of Hindi film music, in most cases it has become something like a 'monthly music' formula. Forget about producing immortal music.

Monthly music?

See, if the music is popular for a month or so (people are happy with) whatever they can earn in a month or so. And that is quite paying even if it remains on the top of the chart for a month because the population has also increased. So, (the attitude is) whatever one can earn in one month is good.

But music, I feel, has taken the shape of noise -- shor sharaba, dham dhoom.

In terms of artists, some of the actors and actresses are very good as are some of the directors. But by and large the kind of commitment and professionalism that people had during our time and even before, is lacking today. The attitude of many of the actors is to make hay while the sun shines. Maybe they are right. After all, who are we to say that they are wrong? People talk about (encouraging) youngsters, their talents etc. It is very easy to talk like that but there is no point in just talking about youngsters. Taal mail hona chahiye.

Sanjay Bhansali is a great director but then so is Mani Ratnam. For that matter, Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai are seniors, and great directors too. Even Ramesh Sippy.

On the other hand, Sanjay Dutt's dialogues in Lage Raho Munna Bhai are great dialogues.

So, dono ka mila jula hona chahiye (there has to be a unity and an understanding between the young and the not so young).
