How did you approach the
music of the film?
In terms of music, lyricist Javed Akhtar, music composer Anu Malik and I have tried to recreate the music that was prevalent in Indian cinema earlier in the 1940s and 1950s. We have used instruments like the sarangi, tabla and dholak. We have tried to maintain sensitivity in them.
Anu Malik is a terrific music composer. But he is insecure so he does the things he does. Javed and I keep telling him, 'you are good and nobody can take that away from you.' But I think the insecurity comes with the profession. You can't do anything about it.
What do you think of the film's box office
chances?
I never bother about that. I make a film and if
you like it, good enough -- and if you don't, it's my bad luck.
A lot of effort must have gone into making this film, especially the costumes?
Honestly, after doing Border (above) and LoC, I don't think it was difficult to make this film.
