Casting coups in Bollywood

Andaz, 1949

In the 1950s, there were only three heroes who Bollywood-obsessed India was in awe of: Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand.

Andaz is the only film in which Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor acted together. Rajsaab wanted Dilipsaab in his Sangam (1964), but his contemporary refused, and Rajendra Kumar took the role.

Nargis, the love of Rajsaab's life, also found her first hit as a heroine in director Mehboob Khan's film.

In Andaz, both Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor are in love with Nargis, but she marries the latter. When Nargis discovers that Dilip Kumar is in love with her too, she is devastated.

The song Tu Kahe Agar was a big hit. Composer Naushad insisted on using a certain Lata Mangeshkar's voice in the film, this was when Shamshad Begum reigned supreme in the Hindi movie playback world. Latadidi never looked back.
