Bipasha Basu, Billo
Bipasha is a very busy actress. I first met her on the sets of Corporate. We hardly spoke to each other, because I had to take the flight back to Delhi. Our next meeting was cancelled because my husband was very sick. Then I had to rush to meet her because she was leaving for Mauritius.
Then we had a good chat at her residence.
She does not have a glamorous look, but a subdued one. She's glamorous only in her two item numbers, Beedi and Namak.
She plays a small-time crooner in a small hotel in Meerut. I went to these small pubs in Meerut to check out these women who sing there, what kind of educational background they have, etc. I saw that they used to wear outfits that actresses like Kareena wore in hit songs.
Initially, I thought of giving her salwar kameezes. But Kareena is shown in salwars, so I gave Bipasha skirts and jeans.
Billo is an outgoing person who drives her own car. I've given her bright colours. In Beedi, we talk of fire. So I have taken fire colours like blues, oranges, pinks, and shimmery material.
In the other song, Namak, we first gave her a black sari. But she wasn't comfortable in it during the choreography. So we changed it to a skirt.
When a star has two item numbers, it's always better to have two get-ups. But I felt it was a repetition, visibly the hairdo and the jewellery. This is the designer's urge that has been missed out. I could not be present for the Namak shoot. I would have added gajras for her because it is a typical small-town mujra. Instead of her open hair, I would have given her a different look
