Malayalam Cinema: The year so far

July 20, 2006
5. Achanurangatha Veedu:

One of the most realistic and poignant films made in Malayalam in recent times. Nobody could believe the offbeat film was made by the person responsible for crass, commercial films like Meesa Madhavan, Pattalam and Chaandu Pottu.

Lal Jose should be congratulated for making such a moving film with Salim Kumar who, until now, was only seen as a comedian. Salim was excellent as the helpless father of three girls. The film is inspired by incidents that took place in Suryanelli in Kerala, where a girl was molested after she was lured with promises of an acting career. It seriously talks about how young girls are attracted to the world of glamour, and then thrown into the ugly world of prostitution. Salim Kumar won the Kerala State Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance.
