Malayalam Cinema: The year so far

July 20, 2006
It has been a reasonably good year. Mindless, crass fare that succeeded at the box office in 2005 made way for good, realistic films that succeeded this year. 2006, so far, has belonged to one of the greatest actors in Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal. All three of his films have been commendable, and all have tasted success.

1: Tanmatra: One of the best films to have been released in recent times. Blessey, who directed Kazhcha last year, has demonstrated that his first critical and commercial success was not a flash in the pan. Tanmatra is even better, and definitely a landmark in Mohanlal's career.

As Ramesan Nair, a middle-class employee in the government secretariat afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, Mohanlal gives us a scintillating performance, his best after Vaanaprastham. It may, in all probability, win him another National Award!
