The Making Of Omkara

July 13, 2006
Production worked in tandem with art and no stone was left unturned, literally, in getting the look right. The detailing was done to the T to create an authentic UP village. Most of the village structures were made of wood supplemented with bamboo matts and then weathered with Plaster of Paris.

Little period props and other furniture details that might barely be noticed yet stamp that authenticity on the texture of the film, were locally improvised and the rest sourced and carried from Bombay.

"For example, near the main entrance, I built a honeybee comb which didn't cost me an extra penny but its just the kind of touch that makes an art director like me happy," recalls Sameer Chanda, the Art Director.

He adds, "My favourite room is Omi's bedroom with its dash of reds and yellows. The colours of passion. The swing, the mirror, the broad windows with daylight streaming in add up to give it a very ethereal and poetic ambience. The room has no ceiling. During the day, its covered with black cloth and then shot in. As for the night shots, we took care to make it high enough for the DOP to put his lights on top. It looks and feels different from the rest of the village. I referenced a lot of Lucknow havelis and UP houses before designing this one."
