Nominee Spotlight: Reese Witherspoon

Election (1999)

Often unfairly dismissed as another high school comedy, this Alexander Payne film (yes, the man behind Sideways) is a deceptively clever and cynical political satire.

Witherspoon plays Tracy Flick, a relentless overachiever who has her little heart set on winning the election for student council body president. Matthew Broderick plays a teacher who has rightfully caught on to Tracy's scheming ways and wants to put her in her place -- and he has absolutely no idea what he is in for.

Infuriatingly chirpy and bright-eyed, Tracy goes on her evil, annoying rampage.

Witherspoon nailed the role with hilarious facial contortions and superbly understated evil.

A breakthrough performance if ever there was one.
