Blast From The Past
First, they have an affair on the sly or what they like us to believe is a 'weak moment'. Then a child shows up and paradise is lost.
Loosely adapted from Erich Segal's Man, Woman and Child, Shekhar Kapur's first film Masoom dealt with a man's past creating serious tensions between the husband and wife. In between the shame and helplessness in Naseeruddin Shah's disposition and the hurt and humiliation on Shabana Azmi, there is unspoken sympathy for the innocent child (Jugal Hansraj). The manner in which the complex emotions were articulated on screen tugged the heart and evoked awe.
On the other hand, Mahesh Manjrekar's Astitva was dramatically different. Here, the wife (Tabu) had been unfaithful but both her husband (Sachin Khedekar) and teenaged son (from her affair) were scathing in their judgement and unable to forgive her.
