Ek, Do, Teen...
Bollywood's extra-marital affairs

August 9, 2006
The Jealousy Trap

Jealousy appears to be a married man's favourite emotion. And in Bollywood, it's often a case of smoke without fire.

Like in Lajwanti, one of the films in competition at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, a workaholic's (Balraj Sahni) neglected missus (Nargis) finds platonic companionship in a male friend (Prabhu Dayal). The busy husband sees green and accuses his wife of cheating and throws her out, only to reconcile years later.

Rajesh Khanna in Aap Ki Kasam is not so lucky. He suspects his wife (played by Mumtaz) of being more than friends with their genial neighbour (Sanjeev Kumar). Furious at his allegation, she promptly leaves him and eventually remarries.

Jeetendra plays a tame hubby to paranoia personified Radhika who warns their good-looking next-door neighbour, played by Rekha, the fact that Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai. Need I say more?

Ditto for Tina Munim who goes to the extent of filing for divorce against Rajesh Khanna, after she is convinced he is having a fling with Padmini Kolhapure in Souten. It takes a huge sacrifice on Kolhapure's part to prove her otherwise. Souten's success encouraged director Saawan Kumar Tak to make another version, unimaginatively titled, Souten Ki Beti.
