On his love for India

In 1990 I met a musician who had been to India. He told me a lot about India and I liked what I heard. He told me about theatre in India. About music, he told me that everything was simple here but dynamic. I was enchanted.

So even before I came here I already had a sense of it. There was a strong Indian community in London -- I learnt to work with them. In 1997 I came here with a play. It had a big impact on me. I had a very good time. I am a global citizen with a few places where I feel at home. And India is very high on that list.

I could tell you 50 reasons why I love India. I like the heat. I like to be in a place where I can feel a liberalism in the hearts of people. There is an openness here. I don't feel very good in a place where people are uptight. I like an environment where people are more relaxed. I feel a pleasure among Indian people. India has a tradition of welcoming people. You have a history of religious tolerance. I feel accepted here and that makes me happy.
