Val Kilmer

Very few actors embody the word intense as effortlessly as Val, and that prompted director Joel Schumacher to cast the handsome actor for the role in 1995's Batman Forever.

Forever, a return to over-the-top camp for the Dark Knight after Burton's fleetingly successful foray into goth, saw a profusion of colour, a million one-liners, and a super A-list starcast.

Val nailed the role, managing to pull off groan-able lines like 'It's the car, right? Chicks love the car' with ease, while convincingly hammering the baddies.

However, Schumacher's Gotham was filled with fascinating characters, including supervillains jostling for screen-room, each of whom deserved a film their own. And Nicole Kidman, looking more gorgeous than ever. Add to that the sidekick, a pretty boy in tights (Chris O'Donnell) crying about his circus memories, and we ended up with a blockbuster summer film with way too much going on to worry about Batman. The Dark who?

Of course, maybe that was because Schumacher never believed in plots, and didn't want us to notice.
