Sandhya Mridul

How did you get this role?

I am very selective about films. Madhur Bhandarkar had seen my work, and everyone -- the producer, his wife, the writers, and designer Ashley Rebello -- recommended me for the role.

Madhur needed a strong, bold character for the film -- a bindaas girl with no inhibitions. Later, he told me that he liked the way I talked and wanted to cast me in the film. After Saathiya and Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II , I kept getting sister roles, or cop roles or those bitchy roles. I can't keep repeating myself, that's why I waited till I was sure of what I was taking up. I really wanted to work with him [Madhur], and knew my part in the film was strong.

My Character:

I play Pearl, an airhostess. She has the occasional glass of wine, and smokes. She is blatant about her life. She wants to marry a rich man and settle down. She is honest, not cunning. Her friends love her. But there are people who don't.

She shares an apartment with Konkona and Tara Sharma. You know how difficult it is to get a house in Mumbai! They share a very close relationship. The three of us are very different but compatible in real life. Our characters on screen required us to do the same, so we did not have to work very hard on our roles.

The first day of shooting, Madhur watched me with hawk eyes. But from the next day onwards, he was cool. Everyone called me goondi on the sets! We would have a lot of fun, and Tara was always the scapegoat!

One of the lead actors, Amit Raili, died while we were shooting. He had a major role in the film -- he was playing Konkona's love interest. His death affected all of us. [Amit, a 26-year-old model, was due to make his film debut with Page 3]. He had jaundice and had not taken it seriously.

I love the scene when I get married and bid farewell to Konkona. Pearl is a tough nut to crack and this is her vulnerable moment. She's very concerned about Konkona. She tells her that if anyone harasses her, all she has to do is call Pearl and she will be there!

Forthcoming films:

Luke Kenny's debut film Thirteenth Floor, Sathak Dasgupta's The Great Indian Butterfly and Samar Khan's Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye.
