The last few years have been some of the worst years for Malayalam films, with films degenerating to extensions of mimicry parades. But 2004 was different, as films with good storylines reappeared on screen, and unknown filmmakers from faraway countries made good Malayalam films.

It is too soon to say the glory days of Malayalam cinema are back, but a spark was definitely seen.

The year also belonged to Mammootty who acted in the film of the year, Kaazhcha. Dileep deserves a mention for courageously producing a film like Kathavaseshan.

rediff.com looks at the five Best Malayalam films of 2004.

Kaazhcha
Director: Blessy

Kaazhcha was different from the majority of films seen over recent years. After a long time, a film was made with an original concept. Director Blessy's apprenticeship under the late Padmarajan was evident in each frame.

Kaazhcha is the rare example of a film that combined artistic and commercial elements judiciously. Result: It was accepted wholeheartedly by an audience starved of good cinema. The critics were also delighted with the film.

After a long gap, people saw Mammootty in a role where he played the character and not himself. He was a man lovingly adopting a child who strays into his village in Kerala from Kutch, Gujarat. In no time, the village also adopts the child as their own.
