So what if the year belonged to male actors in Tamil? There were more than enough female stars to steal some of their thunder.

Our first vote goes to Meera Jasmine.

It is rare for an actress in Tamil cinema to get a role of substance. Jasmine, the National Award-winning actress, was lucky that Lohitadas decided to remake Kasturiman in Tamil and cast her as the heroine. She had excelled in the same role in the Malayalam original, but still managed to go a step further. Her first hit in Tamil was the Lingusamy-directed Run. Now, she has been cast in his latest, Sandakozhi. 2006, it seems, may be as bright.
