The Venice Film Festival, considered to be crucial for an Oscar nod, has a long Hollywood guest list, including Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Reese Witherspoon, Mira Nair, Angelina Jolie, Will Smith and Robert De Niro, among others.
But the starry scene didn't go down well with some Italians.
Anti-globalisation activists held demonstrations at the venue and protested against 'Hollywood's wealth' and high ticket prices.
Security at Lido -- the island where the festival is held -- has been beefed up.
