I love romance and love stories. But my idea of a romantic film is not running around trees, singing songs and going to Switzerland. My idea of a love story is more mature. It's like a conversational film. These kinds of films are rare to come by in India. But they are made.
Take Kal Ho Na Ho. It was conversational, with a bit of humour. It's not about parents and the couple fighting, and revenge problems. For a change, it's about personal conflicts -- about a man dying, a woman not being able to tell him what she feels... At least something is different about it.
I liked Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge also, for its Indian sensibilities. But I mean the films, minus the songs and dances. I want to do a good love story with no songs. It should be a gripping film with just two characters.

I choose my films on instinct, based on the story and director. If I like what I read, then I want to see who's making it; if the director has the ability to make it well. The costars don't matter. That's why I've done movies that have no lead actors, and if there are lead actors, there are no big names.
I like to work with new directors. Their sensibilities are new. They don't necessarily want to make just a commercial masala movie. They want to prove a point by showing their kind of cinema. They come with these new ideas of shooting a film. This makes my job simpler and keeps me excited about it. Sometimes, seasoned directors can be very blasé about films. You tend to lose interest too.
